Sciatica
Sciatica, also known as false sciatica, is a condition that is often experienced as a sharp and intense pain that radiates from the buttock region and can extend down the back of the thigh and lower leg. Sometimes, the discomfort and pain can even be felt all the way down to the toes. It is important to note that sciatica itself is not a diagnosis in itself, but rather a symptom of other underlying problems.
Sciatica usually occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or irritated. The sciatic nerve is one of the longest in the body and runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and all the way down to the legs. When something presses on or affects this nerve, it can cause pain and discomfort that spreads along its path.
Cause & common symptoms of sciatica
Common causes of sciatica
Sciatica can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Herniated disc
A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gelatinous core of a disc in the spine bulges out and presses on the sciatic nerve. This can cause pain along the nerve’s path.
Spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can press on the sciatic nerve and cause pain in the buttock and legs.
Muscle imbalance
Tight or weakened muscles in the pelvic and back area can put extra pressure on the sciatic nerve and lead to pain.
Injury
Injury to the spine or pelvic area can lead to compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica.
Inflammation
Inflammation in the area around the sciatic nerve can also trigger symptoms of sciatica.
Pregnancy
Pregnant women may experience sciatica due to increased strain on the back and pelvic area.
Aging
Aging can lead to changes in the spine and discs that increase the risk of sciatica.
Spondylolisthesis
This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another and can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Piriformis Syndrome
The piriformis muscle, which is located deep in the buttocks, can become tight or pinched, causing sciatica-like pain by pressing on the sciatic nerve, also known as false sciatica.
Common Symptoms of Sciatica
Symptoms of sciatica can range from mild to severe and often include pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg and may even reach the foot.
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot.
Pain that worsens with coughing, sneezing, or exertion.
Difficulty sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
If you experience these symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice and evaluation to determine the cause of the pain and to plan appropriate treatment.
How is sciatica treated?
Before we perform a treatment for sciatica, we always do a proper examination and look at the entirety of your problem. Many times the pain you experience can originate from another or more places in the body.
For sciatica, it is common to design exercises and therapies that aim to strengthen the muscles around the spine and buttock area. These exercises can help improve posture and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.
